Nolan’s installations
and sculpture are created from post-consumer material including bottle caps,
glass baby food jars, discarded umbrellas and plastic six-pack holders.
From a distance the identity of the material is often disguised not only
by the sheer quantity used, but also by the way it is reconstructed. Through
experimentation with the physical properties of these collected objects,
Nolan creates structures resembling those found in nature, such as webs,
nests and pods. Umbrella parts are combined into spiral forms like swirling
celestial galaxies or a DNA double helix. In Falls, thousands of
plastic six-pack holders are connected with grommets so that they resemble
torrents of rushing water. The works use repetition as a primary structural
element, and so are incredibly labor intensive to make. Covering the gallery
walls and ceiling like a giant wave, Please Play Again is a work
made from spools of copper wire twisted around hundreds of colorful plastic
bottle caps.
The exhibition also features Nolan’s first glass works, in which baby food
jars are stacked together, glazed with powdered glass pigment, and slumped
and fused together. In 2004 Nolan had a solo exhibition at the Hillwood
Art Museum of Long Island University. Her works have been exhibited in numerous
commercial galleries as well as a variety of public art contexts including:
a garden in New York’s East Village, Newark’s Gateway Plaza, New York University’s
Washington Square windows on Broadway, and a permanent installation at Harvard
University.
A native of Alabama, Ms. Nolan lives and works in New York City. |
